American Express Canada Launches Chef in Residence Program with Montreal Chef Danny Smiles
New culinary initiative debuts during Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Montreal
TORONTO – American Express Canada has announced the launch of American Express Chef in Residence, a new culinary initiative designed to expand premium dining experiences for eligible Cardmembers while spotlighting Canadian culinary talent.
The program officially launches May 21 during the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix weekend in Montreal with acclaimed chef Danny Smiles serving as the inaugural Chef in Residence.
Smiles is the chef behind Le Violon, one of Canada’s most recognized emerging restaurants. The restaurant recently earned the number two spot on Air Canada’s 2025 Best New Restaurants list and was ranked eighth on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list.
Premium Dining Experiences Expand Beyond the Track
According to American Express Canada, the Chef in Residence initiative builds on its Platinum Dining Experiences program, offering curated food-focused experiences tied to major cultural and sporting events.
“At American Express, our commitment to dining reflects our focus on Cardmembers’ deep passion for food and discovery,” said Kimberly Kuzmak, Vice President of Lifestyle Benefits, Partnerships, & Brand at American Express Canada, in a statement announcing the program.
“Chef in Residence builds on our foundation of delivering premium culinary programming inspired by what matters most to our Cardmembers, while continuing to elevate Canadian culinary talent.”
The Montreal launch will include Maison Amex, a temporary lounge space for eligible American Express Cardmembers operating during Grand Prix weekend at 2114 rue de la Montagne.
Chef Smiles has curated the food and beverage program for the venue, featuring cocktails and dishes designed specifically for the Formula 1 weekend experience.
Le Violon Becomes Part of Grand Prix Weekend Programming
As part of the partnership, eligible Cardmembers will also have access to exclusive dinner packages at Le Violon on May 22.
The restaurant has quickly gained national attention for its contemporary culinary approach and has become one of Montreal’s most sought-after reservations.
“Partnering with American Express has been incredibly meaningful for me,” Smiles said in the release.
“I look to work with brands that not only champion great food but genuinely invest in the people behind it.”
Dining Experiences Continue to Drive Lifestyle Travel
The launch reflects a growing trend among hospitality and financial brands using culinary programming to create destination-based experiences around major international events.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Montreal continues to attract visitors from across Canada and internationally, with restaurants, hotels, nightlife venues, and experiential activations becoming major parts of the race weekend economy.
American Express says the Chef in Residence initiative is expected to continue expanding through future culinary collaborations and Cardmember-focused events.
