Alberta Gains Two New Independent Senators Appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Ottawa – In a significant move to fill vacant seats in the Senate, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of two independent senators from Alberta. The newly appointed senators, Daryl Fridhandler and Dr. Kristopher Wells, were chosen by the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, based on recommendations from the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments.

Daryl Fridhandler brings over four decades of legal expertise to the Senate. A well-respected corporate lawyer, arbitrator, mediator, and businessman, Fridhandler has been recognized with several awards throughout his career, including the prestigious King’s Counsel designation. His extensive experience includes providing legal counsel to both private and public companies and playing an active role in various community organizations.

Dr. Kristopher Wells is an influential educator and advocate, particularly within the 2SLGBTQI+ community. His work in advancing diversity, equity, and human rights in Alberta and across Canada has earned him numerous accolades, such as the Alberta Centennial Medal and the Alberta Award for the Study of Canadian Human Rights and Multiculturalism. Dr. Wells’ appointment is seen as a significant step toward enhancing representation and inclusivity in the Senate.

These appointments were made through a merit-based process introduced in 2016, aimed at ensuring that senators are independent and equipped to address the diverse challenges facing the country. The process is open to all Canadians, reinforcing the Senate’s role as a chamber of sober second thought that reflects the nation’s varied perspectives.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed confidence in the new appointments, stating, “I congratulate Mr. Fridhandler and Dr. Wells on their appointment as Parliament’s newest independent senators. Their experiences will make them important voices for their communities.”

The addition of Fridhandler and Wells is expected to strengthen the Senate’s capacity to provide critical insights and independent perspectives on legislation, particularly on issues related to corporate governance, human rights, and community advocacy.

As the Senate continues to evolve, these appointments underscore the ongoing efforts to make the upper chamber more reflective of Canada’s diverse population, ensuring that it remains a key institution in the country’s democratic process.
