Across Boundaries: Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Health and Addiction Care in the GTA
In the bustling streets of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where the pulse of diversity beats strong, one organization stands out for its unwavering commitment to providing free mental health and addiction services to marginalized communities. Across Boundaries, under the leadership of Executive Director Aseefa Sarang, has become a beacon of hope for individuals facing financial and cultural barriers to essential care.
Founded 28 years ago, Across Boundaries has evolved into a vital lifeline for racialized and Black individuals, offering services deeply rooted in Anti-Oppressive and Anti-Black Racism frameworks. Recognizing the systemic inequalities embedded in our society, Aseefa and her team strive to dismantle socioeconomic oppression while acknowledging the impact of dominant power structures on mental health and well-being.
What sets Across Boundaries apart is its holistic approach to care. In addition to traditional counseling services, the organization goes above and beyond by providing over 11,000 hot meals and packaged meal deliveries to those in need. This understanding of the intersectionality of mental health and basic needs is a testament to their dedication to serving the whole individual.
Last year alone, Across Boundaries served 1,088 individuals, providing them with much-needed support and resources. Aseefa’s visionary leadership has propelled the organization forward, expanding its reach and impact. From a small team of four, Across Boundaries now boasts a dedicated staff of 44 professionals, proficient in 17 different languages, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Under Aseefa’s guidance, partnerships have flourished with organizations such as the Canadian Mental Health Associations (Toronto and York), Addiction Services Central Ontario, and the City of Toronto, among others. These collaborations enable Across Boundaries to extend its reach and provide comprehensive care to those who need it most.
