$1.9M Investment Brings 24 Affordable Homes to Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – In a joint effort to address housing affordability and homelessness, the federal and provincial governments have announced an investment of over $1.9 million through the Canada–Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI) to support the development of 24 affordable homes in Hamilton.
The homes are located in the King William Supportive Housing Building at 257 King William Street, which was completed in October. Operated by Indwell and owned by CityHousing Hamilton, the building provides supportive apartments tailored for Black, Indigenous, and racialized individuals experiencing homelessness in the city. Residents began moving into the building earlier this month.
This project is part of a broader federal commitment to build and repair over 12,750 homes in Hamilton. The King William Supportive Housing Building marks a significant milestone, incorporating wrap-around supports funded by the City of Hamilton to ensure long-term stability for residents.
Funding Breakdown
The $9.77 million supportive housing initiative received contributions from multiple levels of government:
- $6.47 million through the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI2), announced in 2022.
- $1.9 million from the Canada–Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI).
- $1.4 million annually from the City of Hamilton for rent subsidies and supportive services.
Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath emphasized the importance of projects like these in addressing systemic inequities and reducing homelessness. The development aligns with the city’s broader housing strategy and showcases the effectiveness of partnerships between various levels of government and community organizations.
By focusing on vulnerable populations, this initiative aims to foster a stronger, more inclusive Hamilton, addressing both immediate housing needs and long-term community well-being.
